Why purchase a Canopy Spare Wheel Carrier?
Not sure if a Canopy Spare Wheel Carrier is the right option for your 4WD? Well, in our opinion, rear wheel carriers are extremely undervalued!
Just imagine that you’re out in your 4WD, grappling up muddy tracks, over boulders and generally having a great time. What happens when you blow a tyre and need your replacement? Well, if you’re like most people you’re going to need to get nice and muddy underneath your vehicle to retrieve your spare tyre or climb up on the roof if that’s where you stored it.
Neither option is optimal and neither is going to make you very happy. Not when your replacement tyre is covered in mud or needs to be dug out from under your camping gear, jerry cans and everything else on the roof. It’s so much easier when you can just undo a bolt and your spare tyre is right in front of you, ready to go at a moment’s notice. You can even bolt the old tyre to the carrier and take it home to fix at your leisure.
All in all, a Canopy Wheel Carrier is a simple but very workable solution to carrying your spare tyre in a position where it’s easy to access and makes your life so much easier!
Benefits of the Dunn and Watson Canopy Spare Wheel Carrier
There are lots of benefits to fitting a Spare Wheel Carrier to the rear of your 4WD, from making it more accessible in an emergency, protecting the rear of your vehicle and fitting water, gas or fuel tanks under the chassis.
Accessibility
The easiest location for your spare wheel is on the rear of your canopy as all you need to do is unscrew it from the rod and lift it off the shelf. Attaching your old tyre is just the reverse – slide it onto the rod of the Dunn and Watson Canopy Spare Wheel Carrier, bolt it in place and it simply sits on the shelf, until removed for repairs. Fitting a spare wheel underneath the chassis is a recipe for disaster, because then you need to struggle to get it out and then refit the old tyre in its place. The roof rack is no better, because you have to get the tyre up there and then back down again. Everyone knows that 4WD tyres are not light!
Protection
Unless you have a tow bar that provides some protection to the rear of your 4WD, there’s not much between you and the vehicle that rear ends you on the road. That’s because whilst we love fitting bull bars to our 4WDs, we tend to ignore similar protection for the rear of our vehicles. This is where a rear fitting wheel carrier can add some additional protection if you’re rear ended or even if you go up and down in quick succession when traversing gullies. The rear wheel carrier can prevent a lot of damage, which would cost thousands to fix, because most of the impact will hit the rear tyre on the back of your canopy.
Space
Space underneath your vehicle is not something that most people consider, unless they are 4WD enthusiasts. This is when talk focuses on storing water, LPG or additional diesel tanks underneath the vehicle. If you’ve already got a tyre under there, then you’ve just lost most of your valuable storage space. A rear fitted wheel carrier makes a lot of sense!
