Everything you need to know about our stainless steel 125kg locking drawer slides
The Dunn & Watson medium duty 125kg locking drawer slides are perfect for tradies, 4WD enthusiasts, campers and boaties. Installed as runners in your boat or vehicle’s drawer systems, they not only allow you to smoothly open and close your drawers, but they also provide a much-needed safety locking feature.
This means that your drawers won’t slide back and forth during transit or when you’re parked on a slope. Since they are made from 304 grade stainless steel, there’s also the added benefit that they won’t corrode in salty environments. This means that they are ideal for anyone who lives, works or plays in coastal areas or for boaties who need to keep everything shipshape on board.
What sizes are available?
These medium duty 125kg locking drawer slides are available in lengths starting from 508mm to 1016mm, so you should find a pair that suits your project quite easily. These runners offer you a full extension, so for example, if you select the 1016mm sliders, they will extend to their full length of 1016mm. The full extension feature gives you easy access to whatever is stored at the back of the drawers.
It’s also important to note that since these are locking drawer slides, the triggers that lock and unlock these runners are located at the front of each slider. So when you install them into your drawer system, you need to add an additional 25mm to the required length. So in the above example, you would need to make sure that the available space for these runners is 1016mm + 25mm, which totals 1041mm.
How do these 125kg locking drawer slides operate?
These 125kg locking drawer slides operate just like non-locking drawer slides, except that they have the additional locking feature. This means that when they are closed and locked they will not slide open when you are driving or parked on a slope. Likewise, when they are locked in the open position, they will remain open and will not slide closed or be pushed closed. The only way they can be opened or closed is if you release the trigger mechanisms located at the front end of each slider.
This is a huge safety feature that prevents fingers being jammed inside the drawers as they slam shut or people being injured if they suddenly spring open. Another great feature is that the runners will only lock into place when they are fully open or fully closed, so you need to make sure that they are not left partly open. When they are in the correct locking position, you will hear the mechanism click into place.
To operate these 125kg locking drawer slides, all you need to do is to release both the triggers at the same time and pull the drawer towards you until it reaches its full extension and locks into place. It will remain in this fully open position until you depress both the triggers again and push the drawer closed until you hear the trigger mechanism locking into place again.
Can these drawer slides be disconnected?
Yes, our medium duty stainless steel 125kg locking drawer runners can be disconnected. To do this, you need to open the slides to their full extension. If you press on the triggers again at this point, you can take the runner beyond the full extension and disconnect them. To reconnect the runners again, simply slide them back along the tracks until you hear them click into place.
What if the 125kg weight tolerance isn’t enough?
If the 125kg weight tolerance isn’t large enough for your project, then you can install a second pair of runners above the first pair. However, you need to remember that you can’t just add the weight tolerances. So installing two pairs of 125kg locking drawer runners, one above the other, doesn’t give you a 250kg weight tolerance. In fact, the rule of thumb is that you only gain an additional 75% of the weight tolerance of the second pair, so always keep that in mind. In fact, it’s better to add more drawers than double up on the runners, just because this reduces the risk of any injuries.
Can these 125kg locking drawer slides be retrofitted into your existing drawers?
Yes, our 125kg locking drawer slides can be retrofitted into any drawer system, as long as you have sufficient length available. You can install them into checker plate drawer systems, aluminium drawer systems and even carpet lined drawer systems.
What size 125kg drawer runners do you need?
Essentially, you need to select the size runners that match the weight tolerance you need. So if you want the full 125kg weight tolerance of these runners, then you should only fit the following lengths – 356mm, 406mm, 457mm or 508mm. That’s because the longer the length of the runners, the lower the weight tolerance. This means that if you install a pair of 125kg runners, but the length is 559mm, then the weight tolerance drops to 110kg; if you install runners with a length of 1016mm, it drops to 50kg. These calculations are based on a standard size 500mm square drawer, so if your drawers are a different size or you’re not sure which size to purchase, just give us a call and we’ll give you a hand. Always remember, however, that the longer the extension you need, the lower the weight the drawer can hold.
Benefits of our stainless steel locking drawer slides
One of the biggest benefits of our stainless steel locking drawer slides is that they are strong and long lasting. If you have ever installed regular hardware bought runners in your caravan, 4WD or boat, you’ll know that they don’t last long, particularly when you go off-road. The fact that they are made from stainless steel is an added bonus, because they won’t rust in corrosive environments, such as near coastal areas. Then, of course, you have the safety locking feature that ensures that your drawers are always locked and won’t slide back and forth when you’re driving or parked on uneven ground.
